The Treatment

What Massage Therapy Actually Does

Massage therapy works on soft tissue: muscle, fascia, and the circulation running through it. Sustained pressure and movement change how those layers slide against each other and how blood moves through the area. That is the mechanism behind the loosening you feel afterward: tissue that had been gripping and gliding poorly starts moving again.

It matters most where load is repetitive. Muscle adapts to what you ask of it, and if you ask the same thing every day (the same lift, the same desk position, the same running gait), some tissue shortens and some stops pulling its weight. A registered massage therapist works out which is which, and treats that.

Who It Is For

When Massage Is the Right Call

Training through a block. Managing tissue quality between hard sessions, so the next one is not compromised by the last.

Desk and driving loads. Sustained positions produce a predictable pattern through the neck, shoulders and hips.

Pregnancy and post-natal. Changing load, changing centre of gravity, and a body doing something it has not done before.

Alongside chiropractic or physiotherapy. Soft tissue work and joint work address different things; many patients here use both.

Recovery weeks. Paired with the plunge or red light therapy as part of a deliberate down-week.

Our Registered Massage Therapists

All six are registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. They work in different directions, so choose deliberately; the first free slot is not always the right one.

Geared Performance

This is not a table massage. Geared Performance is Liam Birkwood’s own practice, running out of our clinic. Liam is a registered massage therapist, but a Geared Performance session is built around movement: expect to be assessed, put through positions, and given work to take away. You will not spend the hour face-down.

Come in clothes you can move in. The appointment opens with a movement analysis, which only works if you can actually move.

Hands-on work is part of it, but only part. The logic is straightforward: manual therapy changes how tissue feels today, and loading changes what it can tolerate next month. Treating one without the other is why some problems keep coming back.

It suits people rehabilitating from an injury and intending to return to full load: tendon problems, post-surgical recovery, or persistent pain that has not resolved with rest. It also suits athletes chasing performance when nothing specific hurts.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book massage therapy directly. Some insurance plans ask for a physician’s note before they reimburse. That is a plan rule, not ours, so it is worth checking your coverage before your first visit.

Will my insurance cover it?

We direct bill where we are able to, for all insurers within Telus Health and Medavie. Your specific policy may still not permit direct billing, in which case we provide a receipt you can submit yourself.

Do you treat TMJ and jaw pain?

Yes. Lora Brownson and Miriam Priddle both work on the jaw. Jaw tension rarely stays in the jaw: the muscles that clench are continuous with the neck and the base of the skull, which is why clenching so often arrives alongside headaches and a stiff neck. Treatment covers the whole chain, jaw, neck and the base of the skull, and can be done externally or intraorally. Intraoral work is always explained and consented to first.

Should I book deep tissue or relaxation?

Book the appointment and discuss it at the start. Pressure is adjusted within a session based on what the tissue is doing and what you can tolerate; it is not a separate service.

How is Geared Performance different from a massage?

A massage appointment is hands-on for the full session. A Geared Performance appointment with Liam is movement-led: assessment, hands-on work, and loading, with exercises to take away. You stay dressed in clothes you can move in. Book it if you are rehabilitating an injury or chasing performance; book massage if you want soft tissue work.

Do you offer aromatherapy massage?

Yes. Lora Brownson offers aromatherapy massage, at $5 more than the standard rate for the same length. Book it directly on her schedule.

How often should I come?

It depends on what you are managing and what you are training toward. Your therapist will suggest a spacing after the first assessment. There is no fixed schedule.

What should I expect the first time?

A short intake about your history and what you want out of it, then treatment. You undress only to your comfort level and are draped throughout.
